Someone please help me out on this one.
I'm at 256

I just want to know what my options are for getting new RAM
How much RAM can I have and how much will it cost?

Sora- 05-03-2005
You can buy RAM seperately as long as you know where the RAM is located on your computer. It's better to buy something like 512 MB for casual use and 1024 MB for heavy gaming.

Actually, it's not so much important to know where it is, as it is what type it is. Cheaply, the best places might be a local Staples, they're not too bad as long as you avoid Rebates, and seek for plain out sales.
Online:
www.Tigerdirect.com
Better for other components, and I like their website better, but they're not too bad on RAM.

www.Outpost.com
Slightly cheaper RAM, not as good for most everything else, I'm afraid.

I haven't been to either of those places in a while, so I don't remember about shipping, I think they're exactly the same, though.

The very most RAM possible for a standard newish motherboard is about 2048.
Honestly, for casual with all the crap of XP and such, I would put it closer to 768(256+512) for Casual and 1536(1024+512) for Heavy Gaming and design and such. Ram isn't especially expensive, but a gig is about 100-120 bucks. 512 is more like 50-70.

Just make sure no matter what, you're getting the right kind of ram. If your motherboard supports up to 400 then you're fairly clear for anything, but they existing Ram has to match Speeds per every 2 slots.

Too much RAM
*goes crazy*

ShogoXT- 05-05-2005
Could you tell us what type of comp you have? I suggest www.newegg.com .

makochildren- 05-05-2005
AI, just quit screwing around and buy the seperate RAM.
It's not that hard to get or install. tongue.gif

ShogoXT- 05-05-2005
Not that simple. For all we know AI might need RDRAM (short lived, long discontinued RAM).

SigmaZX- 05-05-2005
RDRAM was super cool when it came out. First RAM that you could get a gig out of.

ShogoXT- 05-05-2005
Lol SD ram came in gigs too. Its just that it was slower than RD cus it ran at same speed as CPU FSB. Having it in sync though actually made it faster in a way so they came out with DDR instead. So DDR RAM is SDRAM just double the FSB instead of the regular.

SigmaZX- 05-05-2005
Oh, whoops. The second I see an S I think of SIMMs, those are totally different, and pretty much obsolete unless you like the really old stuff. 30 and 72 pinners and such.

But honestly, if you look at the clock speed of RDRAM, they're faster than most of the memory we use now. Average is 800Mhz, while average high end DDR2 is like 667Mhz.

Trunks- 05-06-2005
Stupid RD RAM. DDRRAM performs better imo. Not only that, I don't know of any computer company or store that associates with RD RAM. Hopefully AI didn't get a computer during those dark ages.

ShogoXT- 05-06-2005
Here is some info on RDRAM.

We still need to know what kind of comp AI has.

makochildren- 05-06-2005
I'll ask him. That guy is such a bum. tongue.gif

SigmaZX- 05-06-2005
Trunks, DDR performs better in most anyone who knows what they're talking about's opinion. smile.gif

Yeah, couple that with the following statistic.
11 out of 10 dungeoners prefer DDR RAM cause of what it can do of course!
