My family never had broadband until a couple of years ago. I thought it was awesome that we had the "Cool and New" connection. But apparently, other countries such as Korea, Taiwan, and Japan have had Ultra Internet connections for years (or at least they do now). An average joe in one those countries can get an internet connection at 10MBPS or even 100MBPS for less than what we pay for DSL or Cable!
The reasons why are convoluted: 1. Too much land to cover in the USA (smaller distances in foreign countries) 2. US Population density anomalies (Huge cities and rural areas) 3. Penny pinching Communication Corporations
This almost makes me want to move to Japan! Did you know that they have the one of lowest gun death rates in the world there? They also make really awesome products (Anime, Manga, Games, Game Consoles, Arcades, Cell Phones, Computers, loooong list). They're also very polite and respectful.

Another thing for me to hate... Why can't they just get with the program already?

Well hopefully the states will get the internet situation in order. I might be wrong but didn't the administration call for high speed internet across the country by 2007?

I'm finding more and more information about this. I just wish that internet companies would voice their intentions to the public in a better way. I want to know what their plans are so I can suggest something. This may go against the rules of competition (releasing secrets that get copied) but at least the companies could collaborate and help each other. The last thing I want to see is a bunch of ISP's arguing / fumbling ways of providing service.
My brother tells me that Verizon is installing much better internet lines for better service. (Details sketchy)
Apparently, Philadelphia is scheduled to have a "wireless for everyone" plan, where any resident of philly can wirelessly access the internet (outside).
And another interesting thing I found: NTT (Nippon Telegraph and Telephone: Japanese Tech company) is providing a new type of Internet service (ca. 2010). A 1 - 10 Gigabit connection.... Damn.... Just damn.... Of course, to pay for it, you have to get it split up between multiple users. The price is modest in my eyes ([4,500 Yen ~ $44, family plan] [10,000 Yen ~ $97, neighborhood-ish plan]).
I need to do some more research and figure out what's really going on...
