Sorry to say this, but the "Internet 2" sounds like a buncha' stupid $@#%. Not saying that you guys are lying; just saying that it's dumb to make a second. Internet is Internet. And if it's truly something different from the Internet, then call it something else. If what Gerogero says is true, then you already need high speed internet for it to work, as well as a bigger LAN card according to Vexy. If that's true, then what does "Internet 2" even really offer? You're already paying for high speed internet. So what the hell does it offer? someone PLEASE enlighten me. Also, if they monitor what you do on the "Internet 2", then it still shouldn't be worth your time. That's how spyware is created, as well as invasion of privacy. I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but if it only offers "high speed" and you already need "high speed" unless you're at a university, then why use it?

Does it do ANYTHING else besides what the Internet can do?

Does it do anything else besides what Internet 1 does?
You could say the same thing for several inventions Gameboss.

Radio comes in AM, FM and XM.
But really, you just turn any of them on using your stereo and you'll hear music or talk. There is not a HUGE difference between any of them.

TV is in air, cable or satelite, even HD
Again, the difference are not so huge to start a multi paragraph argument over.

Even internet has different forms and subforms
mostly access based mind you wink.gif But you have dial up, cable, DSL, satellite link, T1 and T3. (Plus plenty I know I'm forgetting). They are still labeled even though the provide basically the same thing. No one was dumb enough to call any of the better access forms Internet 2, because you're being delivered the same product.

I understand where everyone is coming from, and this should not become a "Shut the other people up" thread. This should be a very open discussion. Shogo, Gameboss and I are not wrong for criticising Internet2. However, Glass Ring, Black Piccolo and Pretty Soldier are not wrong either, they are making good arguments and they've mentioned some of the things we did. PS was the first to mention I2 was a testbed, not you Shogo. And Gameboss, a third of the people on this thread are making a joke out of Internet 2 (and 3 and 4 biggrin.gif). Its quite possible they already know the shortcomings of I2.

Well, later guys.
I just wanted to make my point and help mellow out the thread.
Jokes and civilized discussion are why I like the dungeon. Please don't lose that.

I didnt mean like that or to get flamed. Im just saying I2 will never replace I1 and its only there to test new tech. As soon as the tech has been fully tested and intergrated they might either let it go or redo the whole thing on a newer tech. They could have given it any name really. I was saying I dont think that is a good thing cus I think that makes people who dont know start to assume things about it.(thats kinda what I ment by being sucked in, its just very misleading) Its just a bit different also because they have it open to public testing.

Come on please dont flame, im just putting some of the info they said themselves with some of my opinion. I seriously didnt mean to come on like that just my opinion.

One question to all of you.

Why should it be called 2? Usually ANYTHING 2 is never called that. They had Coke 2, but no one really cares since its not that different from coke 1! tongue.gif
They have Playstation 2, but when you look at it its barely anything different from Playstation 1!

Look, the point is, that this Internet 2 might end up being the way internet is used by the public. But really, there won't be anything different about the internet itself. Its all the same product. No matter what "2" you are talking about! biggrin.gif

Yes there seems to be some confusion that im against I2?? I love new tech. Always been that way. Its just the way they put it on with the name and such which confuses its purpose. Thats all im in conflict with I swear.

Miss Swiss- 06-09-2005
I almost thought a flame war was breaking out.

I really don't care about internet 2, because usually anything-2 is never called that. Its always called the original form.

I don't say "Come to my house to play Playstation 2"
I say "Lets play Playstation". Why? Because Playstation 2 made Playstation 1 obsolete. This can be found in many cases, like Red Faction and technology.

But you guys have to admit you don't want to misname things. It would be like me writing down "Playstation 4" on my XBox, which we all know is dead wrong.

I'd actually like to thank Shogo for doing his job.
I'm surprised some of you forgot who he is.

Ah... here we go... some kinda' answer:

Mislabeling of Internet2

In light of a recent series of lawsuits filed by the RIAA against university students attending several of the major participants in Abilene, there has been a recent trend in the media to report on a network called "Internet2." Some sources go so far as to suggest Internet2 is a network wholly separate from the Internet. This is misleading since Internet2 is in fact a consortium and not a computer network. It is possible that many news sources have adopted the term Internet2 because it seems like a logical name for a next-generation Internet backbone. Articles that reference Internet2 as a network are in fact referring to the previously mentioned Internet backbone known as the Abilene Network. This forms a high speed backbone by deploying many of the technologies developed by Internet2. Abilene is not an isolated network and its members are usually accessible in some way through the public Internet.
(this is from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

You see now?! It's just the same Internet you already have! It's not gonna' take over anything either. "Internet 2" is a word that shouldn't even exist. dry.gif

Sorry for the double post. I wanted this separate. I didn't mean to sound mean, but I'm trying to wake you guys up as to what you're talking about. Shogo was correct with what he posted. Even if "Internet 2" does exist or manages to exist, you're gonna be monitored and watched a lot according to Black Piccolo. There is nothing new between Internet and "Internet 2".

I didnt want to say anything b4 cus it may make me look mean or somethin. But Gameboss is right. Internet2 is not Internet. Its simply a WAN (wide area network) thats stretched across many universities to help them advertise (omg we r so high tech!) and such. Im saying that because they have complete corporate backing. The name was made like that just to get people interested. The network itself is never going to replace the internet. Oh my bad. Once again internet is a description not a name. While Internet2 IS A TRADEMARK NAME! Now what they ARE doing is what I originally said before I even did research. The network is simply a beta testing network. Its in "testing" stages and the universitys decided to use it. It is using IPv6 like I said developing new TCP/IP protocols and new topologies to support them. Now if all goes well they will slowly be intergrated into the current "internet running servers". NOT THE WAN ITSELF, but the technologies at which they are testing. The universities are prob paying alot for it so the companies are prob making a bundle.

Sorry guys that name Internet2 was just to suck you in. It worked. sad.gif

Didnt mean to come on like that, but I guess it needed to be said.

Suck me into what?

I didn't go to the university for Internet 2 brainiac. Anyone going to school for better internet or testbed internet should be kicked repeatedly. Not only that, have you been to all of the universities providing Internet 2? Some of them might actually have the better form of internet. And yes Universities do test out better methods and forms of internet (*gasp* ohmy.gif rolleyes.gif NO! Not things to better our lives! Anything but that!!! rolleyes.gif) FYI Shogo and Gameboss, Universities already provide high-speed internet for free on campus. Internet 2 is a sharing domain that depends on other computers to achieve higher speeds. It IS different from the Internet 1 the school provides since that can actually slow down or crash if WAY too many people are on it. 2 provides faster speeds and an easy domain to share information. Besides, if Internet 2 is a misnomer, what should the university put instead "Internet". We already get "Internet" guys dry.gif, and let me tell you it can stand some improvement. T1 is great but still has problems from time to time.

I don't know, I just think there is some merit in what some of us were talking about. If we keep this argument up we might try to flame each other. sad.gif I'll at least agree that some of the stories here are not matching. I'm not calling anyone a liar, I'm pointing it out as a sign that some of our universities might not even have the real Internet 2. (or whatever the hell we are supposed to call it). Sho is sounding like a negative ninny though and Gameboss you are being mean. (Yep, no "Smurfy" so you know I'm not happy tongue.gif) Not only that I'm leaving this thread confused and in disbelief of all parties dry.gif Thanks People. Nice work. thedungeon/ermm.gif

dry.gif I already know universities provide high speed internet on campus. I wasn't bein' mean, I had a bad day, and reading this topic furthered my inner rage. Still does. It doesn't really matter what you call it. If you call it "Internet" it won't even matter if it'll supposedly replace the original. If it's what you people truly say it is, then I think it should still be called Internet. Call me crazy, but that's just like if we called TV "TV 2" when it evolved. Whatever though. I'm not pointing fingers or flaming anyone. This whole thing including this topic is pointless, stupid, and not even worth my time. thedungeon/ermm.gif dry.gif Mad? Oh, no, I'm not right now. If I were mad at anything, it'd be me and this topic for makin' PS mad at me dry.gif . Humanity and society REALLY piss me off sometimes dry.gif . Thanks everyone. But let's thank the internet most. Without it, I wouldn't be so mad at myself. Then let's thank me, 'cause I'm an a%# towards people I care about when something else angers me. <---Oh great, look, I'm angry. It's not at ya'll, it's at me. Sorry for gettin' pissed PS. My whole vacation hasn't been hell because of the foolishness of someone else (who's not on this forum).

I'm leavin' this topic.

ShogoXT- 06-12-2005
Yea we stuck to this thread long enough NEW THREAD TIME. I think Il make a poll about the next gen consoles. So put ur attention over there!

Progamer- 06-12-2005
...

Wow...

SigmaZX- 06-12-2005
^ Yeah, that's what I thought.

Sora- 06-13-2005
I'd say wow because everyone is pretty much right
but there is still a huge argument here!

Pretty Soldier- 06-13-2005
Yeah this argument was as stupid as bud vs bud light.
And Smurfy, I wasn't THAT angry with you. I just felt ignored because I did say it was a testbed.

Lets just leave this issue to the goons of society. tongue.gif

Black Piccolo- 06-13-2005
Yeah I'll handle it! biggrin.gif

Woot 500 posts for computer talk!

Glass Ring- 06-14-2005
Someone put this in the trash bin. We all deserve it sad.gif

Gameboss- 06-14-2005
Who's up for tearing the thread up before it goes into the Trash Bin?
