Glass Ring- 05-19-2005
I heard on the radio the recording industries are cracking down on music pirates using Internet 2. At first I didn't care, but when I heard Internet 2 I was puzzled. Since when did Internet 2 exist? Is it a faster, better internet or just the same as internet 1 laugh.gif

What about access? How in the world do you get to internet 2? I can't even handle interenet 1 for crying out loud.

Pretty Soldier- 05-20-2005
Its another internet testbed usually used by universities. You have to sign up for it through them. And yes, since it is accessed via the university you should expect students to use and abuse Internet 2. Its actually faster than Internet 1, but you are correct Glass. RIAA and other watchdogs are coming down on sharing in the Internet 2 realm.

Gerogero- 05-20-2005
Soon Internet 2 will replace internet 1, but you need very high speed internet and a network card capable of handling it. a 10/100/1000 should do nicely. You should also expect Internets 3 and 4 to start out at MIT! biggrin.gif

Black Piccolo- 05-21-2005
Internet 2 is provided at the University, but they monitor your workings!
WAY more than on internet 1.

BTW, I thought Internet 3 was the Matrix. Whats Internet 4 gonna be?
Super Matrix?

^lol

I hope Internet 2 becomes practical for households and easy for people. High Speed Internet is a bitch to pay for

Let me set you straight

Internet 3 is the Matrix

Internet 4 is Unimatrix Zero biggrin.gif

Internet 5 is Heaven! biggrin.gif

ShogoXT- 06-01-2005
I dont think thats how the internet works. Its upgraded as is. Its not just given names like some next console. Internet is just a description like WAN like the Internet is. Its original name was ArpaNET but back then it was government only sort of thing, thats why they changed the name. You cant say its faster either because the internet gets faster everyday. It all depends on all the networks and servers running it. I dont think it can as you say UNLESS, its a completely different code form and works on completely different protocols. Please give a link though to some valid info on it of you can. Id like to look at it though. Maybe what they ment is they are getting rid of HTML? Or maybe using a completely different networking protocol from TCP/IP? That still though wouldnt give it such a name IMO.

Vexy 12- 06-01-2005
Run a google search on it
Check universities in your search as well.

Plus Shogo, I think PS and BP are on the ball on this one. My university offers Internet 2. I have yet to try it or use it, but it is there. Not only that, some people were complaining they needed a 1GB LAN card for Internet 2. So I think everyone here (who isn't joking around! tongue.gif) is telling us the mostly accurate things they know.

Oh and Internet 5 doesn't exist! biggrin.gif

Gameboss- 06-04-2005
Sorry to say this, but the "Internet 2" sounds like a buncha' stupid $@#%. Not saying that you guys are lying; just saying that it's dumb to make a second. Internet is Internet. And if it's truly something different from the Internet, then call it something else. If what Gerogero says is true, then you already need high speed internet for it to work, as well as a bigger LAN card according to Vexy. If that's true, then what does "Internet 2" even really offer? You're already paying for high speed internet. So what the hell does it offer? someone PLEASE enlighten me. Also, if they monitor what you do on the "Internet 2", then it still shouldn't be worth your time. That's how spyware is created, as well as invasion of privacy. I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but if it only offers "high speed" and you already need "high speed" unless you're at a university, then why use it?

Does it do ANYTHING else besides what the Internet can do?

Ah... here we go... some kinda' answer:

Mislabeling of Internet2

In light of a recent series of lawsuits filed by the RIAA against university students attending several of the major participants in Abilene, there has been a recent trend in the media to report on a network called "Internet2." Some sources go so far as to suggest Internet2 is a network wholly separate from the Internet. This is misleading since Internet2 is in fact a consortium and not a computer network. It is possible that many news sources have adopted the term Internet2 because it seems like a logical name for a next-generation Internet backbone. Articles that reference Internet2 as a network are in fact referring to the previously mentioned Internet backbone known as the Abilene Network. This forms a high speed backbone by deploying many of the technologies developed by Internet2. Abilene is not an isolated network and its members are usually accessible in some way through the public Internet.
(this is from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

You see now?! It's just the same Internet you already have! It's not gonna' take over anything either. "Internet 2" is a word that shouldn't even exist. dry.gif

Sorry for the double post. I wanted this separate. I didn't mean to sound mean, but I'm trying to wake you guys up as to what you're talking about. Shogo was correct with what he posted. Even if "Internet 2" does exist or manages to exist, you're gonna be monitored and watched a lot according to Black Piccolo. There is nothing new between Internet and "Internet 2".

I didnt want to say anything b4 cus it may make me look mean or somethin. But Gameboss is right. Internet2 is not Internet. Its simply a WAN (wide area network) thats stretched across many universities to help them advertise (omg we r so high tech!) and such. Im saying that because they have complete corporate backing. The name was made like that just to get people interested. The network itself is never going to replace the internet. Oh my bad. Once again internet is a description not a name. While Internet2 IS A TRADEMARK NAME! Now what they ARE doing is what I originally said before I even did research. The network is simply a beta testing network. Its in "testing" stages and the universitys decided to use it. It is using IPv6 like I said developing new TCP/IP protocols and new topologies to support them. Now if all goes well they will slowly be intergrated into the current "internet running servers". NOT THE WAN ITSELF, but the technologies at which they are testing. The universities are prob paying alot for it so the companies are prob making a bundle.

Sorry guys that name Internet2 was just to suck you in. It worked. sad.gif

Didnt mean to come on like that, but I guess it needed to be said.

Gameboss- 06-06-2005
Yea, well someone had to break it to them. I'm the Marketing Department, but it felt like I was the Director of Human Resources. dry.gif

Glass Ring- 06-09-2005
Thats what they said about Internet 1, you know it alls. dry.gif

I was actually around back then when the Government and Universities were testing it out. There was even a local based phoneline net that some businesses had, and guess what, they were saying the "Internet" would be nothing. That it was only a testbed and marketing gimmick for universities. Guess what, some college students went for the access and eventually told people they knew. Those few had internet while the rest of the US didn't even know what a PC was! And look where we are now.

Plus you guys are being a bit too picky with differences.
Why not call Playstation 1, 2, 3 and PSP just playstation and arrest anyone that even tries to differentiate. What about radio transmission? Why not just call it "M" I mean AM, FM and XM are not all that different, but the differences are there, like it or not.

I'll laugh in 2020 when Internet 2 really does take root. Remind me to line you both up so I can kick your asses when it happens! laugh.gif I can at least ask you guys to keep an open mind about it. Remember people were saying there would be no moonlanding, no way to work from home, no portable phones, no motorized traffic, and a myriad of other things. Its all throughout history, but groundbreaking things keep happening. Its not that hard to picture a better form of internet, I mean months ago you two brought up an article about providing uniform high speed internet to the country. Now you sit here in this thread as the nay sayers.

Damn, now I look like a ranter.
Thanks guys.

Suck me into what?

I didn't go to the university for Internet 2 brainiac. Anyone going to school for better internet or testbed internet should be kicked repeatedly. Not only that, have you been to all of the universities providing Internet 2? Some of them might actually have the better form of internet. And yes Universities do test out better methods and forms of internet (*gasp* ohmy.gif rolleyes.gif NO! Not things to better our lives! Anything but that!!! rolleyes.gif) FYI Shogo and Gameboss, Universities already provide high-speed internet for free on campus. Internet 2 is a sharing domain that depends on other computers to achieve higher speeds. It IS different from the Internet 1 the school provides since that can actually slow down or crash if WAY too many people are on it. 2 provides faster speeds and an easy domain to share information. Besides, if Internet 2 is a misnomer, what should the university put instead "Internet". We already get "Internet" guys dry.gif, and let me tell you it can stand some improvement. T1 is great but still has problems from time to time.

I don't know, I just think there is some merit in what some of us were talking about. If we keep this argument up we might try to flame each other. sad.gif I'll at least agree that some of the stories here are not matching. I'm not calling anyone a liar, I'm pointing it out as a sign that some of our universities might not even have the real Internet 2. (or whatever the hell we are supposed to call it). Sho is sounding like a negative ninny though and Gameboss you are being mean. (Yep, no "Smurfy" so you know I'm not happy tongue.gif) Not only that I'm leaving this thread confused and in disbelief of all parties dry.gif Thanks People. Nice work. thedungeon/ermm.gif
